KUCHING (Aug 10): The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is closely monitoring the haze situation and may cancel or postpone programmes if Air Pollutant Index (API) readings continue to rise.

DBKU deputy director (community services) Rudzaimeir Malek said the commission will act accordingly.

“The API yesterday and today has increased. Yesterday it was above 140 and today it is 160. So, we will monitor it until Wednesday. By Wednesday, we will see what the trend is: whether it is going up or going down.

“If it goes up, then we will have to cancel or postpone (programmes) that have been organised,” he told a press conference.

He said DBKU would comply with any directives issued by the Sarawak government, particularly the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the federal government regarding the haze situation.

“There are matters that we have yet to receive. So, we will comply if there are any instructions to cancel. We will follow the directives.

“I believe our residents are also aware of the necessary precautions, such as reducing physical activities, wearing face masks, and drinking plenty of water,” he added.

He said this when commenting on the Car Free Morning programme and Malaysian Muslim Welfare Association (Perkim) Retro Zumba and Aerodance scheduled for Sept 13.
