Sarawak govt looking into art system for Kuching

KUCHING, Aug 1 (Bernama)-- Sarawak govt is looking at the use of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system which can transport up to 400 passengers as the new public transport for the city.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the ART system will have coaches like trains but will move on tyres on the roads and not on rail tracks.

“ It has equipment which will allow it to read signs (routes) on the roads. It also has coaches with each capable of carrying about 85 passengers,” he said at the launch of the 31st Anniversary of Kuching City at the Sarawak Islamic Complex here today.

Also present were the Mayor of North Kuching, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and Mayor of South Kuching, Datuk James Chan Khay Syn.

Abang Johari said the ART system could take up to five coaches which will be able to accommodate up to 400 people while its cost was lower than the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) in Kuala Lumpur as it did not require elevated roads.

“ Its cost is one third that of the LRT. It is still being studied and there is a big possibility (of it being used in Kuching city),” he said.

He added that the state government only needed to expand the route of the ART system in the city and it will run on dedicated paths to avoid traffic congestion.

However, Abang Johari did not confirm if the trial period of the ART system in the city would be held this year, adding that city folks will just have to wait.

He also said that the trial run of three hydrogen buses would probably be this month and Kuching could be the first city in southeast Asia to use this technology.
