KUCHING: Several public premises managed and run by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) here are closed beginning today.

The closure, which runs until further notice, is meant as a way to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The premises are the DBKU Library in Majma’ Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Complex at Jalan P Ramlee, all DBKU community libraries; the Cat Museum at DBKU headquarters on Bukit Siol, and the Orchid Garden at Pengkalan Sapi in Petra Jaya.

In announcing this, Assistant Minister in Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the commission would issue notices to hawker’s centres, markets, eateries and also night markets in areas under its jurisdiction to temporary close their operations.

“The DBKU has decided to cancel the ‘Earth Hour’ programme, to be held this month’s end. It is also postponing the Ramadan Bazaar, subject to the latest developments to be announced from time to time.

“The Friendly Neighbourhood (KJM)’s leisure and sports activities would also have to be postponed to a later date, once the (Covid-19) situation is under control,” he told reporters during a press conference here yesterday.

Other events slated for rescheduling would be the ‘Car Free Day’ and the ‘Bulan Kebersihan’ (Cleanliness Month) campaign.

DBKU would also be scaling down its in-house activities, particularly its essential services such as meetings, said Dr Abdul Rahman.

“However, the DBKU Payment Counter remains operational, but it would ensure that all the preventive and control measures are made, such as the provision of hand sanitisers,” he added.

Joining the assistant minister in the press conference were Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datu Junaidi Reduan and DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad.
