KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has never imposed any rental charges for event space at Kuching Waterfront.

In a statement released yesterday, the commission said that it is only charging for its various services rendered upon request.

“The services which are commonly requested by event organisers are area cleaning services (before, during and after the event), rental of potted plants, rental of barricades, issuance of permits for advertisements (fishtail, banner, and buntings) and temporary hawker’s permit, traffic wardens services and licensing.

“All service charges imposed are in accordence with the ‘User Pay Concept’ policy. As for the cost of cleaning and desludging, DBKU has to pay the cost of services to the contractor (vendor) – this is an overhead that DBKU has to bear,” DBKU said.

DBKU issued the statement in response to a statement by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah that he will speak to DBKU with regards to high charges for space rentals at Kuching Waterfront.

When met at the Fifth Annual Pongal Harvest Festival held in Kuching Waterfront on Sunday, he pointed out that the charges set should be reasonable as the events held are to promote the state’s historical and cultural heritage.

He added that those who are renting the space are also charged with ‘stall maintenance’.

“Personally, I feel we want to promote Kuching – there are costs to bear, but they must be reasonable as this is not time for people to make money.

“We need to sort it out with the new DBKU Datuk Bandar , and he has indicated that he will bring his team to meet and discuss,” Abdul Karim said, adding that Sibu Municipal Council had a better space rental rate.
