KUCHING: The Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) is planning a pilot project on household waste separation to start in March.

Kuching North mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan said the project, to be carried out in selected residential areas, would help reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills while encouraging households to be greener.

He said DBKU would work with its community-based committees to educate residents on separating waste that can be recycled or composted from general waste.

“We are trying to do separation, especially plastic and paper that can be recycled, as well as food waste. If that is taken out, then the volume of rubbish going to the landfill will be reduced, ” he said when met at DBKU headquarters.

Junaidi said the pilot project would involve residents separating their waste at home instead of bringing recyclable materials to a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) centre.

“For example, we can provide two bins per household and collect recyclable and non-recyclable waste on different days.

“If the project proves to be efficient or effective, we will extend it to other places, ” he said.

On another matter, Junaidi said more clarification was needed on the Federal Government’s recommendation for designated smoking areas to be set up outside eateries and in public places.

He said it was not clear what the Housing and Local Government Ministry meant by “designated smoking areas”.

“If you create a designated area three metres away from the nearest table, does it mean that you are not allowed to smoke in the areas that are not designated for smoking?

“As it is, if you are three metres away you can smoke, so why do you need zoning?” he said, adding that DBKU would wait for the ministry’s guidelines on the matter before deciding on its implementation.
