KUCHING: The tender for the beautification of Kuching North has been issued and the project is expected to kick-start at the end of the year, said Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.

Abang Abdul Wahap said that project is expected to take 18 months to be completed and it is currently in the midst of handling over the sites to the companies awarded.

“One of the things planned for the project is to improve the water quality at the pond in Reservoir Park in order to provide a better experience for visitors,” he told reporters after chairing DBKU’s monthly meeting at DBKU Auditorium in Petra Jaya here today.

In tandem with the federal government’s ruling on smoking ban at public eateries, Abang Abdul Wahap said that the council had in fact been encouraging eateries to set up ‘smoke free zone’ in their premises two years before the ruling was announced.

“This has been our initiative all this while before they make it into a law. And to great extent, I am proud to say that we have not caught anyone smoking in the eateries.”

He also shared the council is collaborating with institutions of higher learning in working towards a tobacco free generation.

On the management of Kuching Waterfront, Abang Abdul Wahap said that the council will take over the management starting January next year and a special task force will soon be established to look after the up-keep of the area including security and littering issues.

It was reported in February that Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg had verbally agreed for the management of Kuching Waterfront to be handled solely by DBKU.

Kuching Waterfront is currently jointly managed by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation and DBKU.

On another note, Abang Abdul Wahap refused to comment on the speculation regarding DBKU commission member Dato Wee Hong Seng leaving the council to join Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

Meanwhile, during the meeting, Abang Abdul Wahap said he was proud that DBKU is one of the only three local authorities nationwide and the first state government agency to receive the ‘Anti-Corruption Management System ISO 37001:2016’ certificate.

He said that DBKU was first selected by Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre and United Nation Development Programme to participate in the anti-corruption certification project.

The Anti-Corruption Management System ISO 37001:2016 is also a standard developed by International Standard Organisation to focus on corruption management and efforts made to address corruption activities.
