KUCHING: The 13th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference (APOC), which will be held here on July 24-28, will feature an Orchid Landscape Display and Competition involving orchid experts and exhibitors from at least 14 countries.

Deputy State Secretary Datu Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said the competition is one of the highlights of APOC 13, which will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

“A spectacular array of the finest orchid species and hybrids from countries such as Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei, China, and the Philippines will be on display as the participants vie for the coveted recognition,” he told a press conference after chairing the APOC meeting yesterday.

“Other activities include the best international and local orchid landscape display, cut flower competition and display, individual orchid competition and display, and container garden competition and display.

“The stunning displays of orchids will also be open to members of the public for free,” he said.

Other side activities include orchid flower arrangement and maintenance workshop, orchid walk, musical orchid, orchid fashion competition, children’s colouring and drawing competition, orchid arts and crafts demonstration, terrarium plants competition, children’s orchid discovery, and APOC quiz.

Visitors will be able to purchase hybrid orchids from Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, and Ecuador as well as landscaping materials, agriculture products, plant-related products, crafts, and food at the APOC marketplace.

The prestigious triennial APOC – organised by the Sarawak government, APOC Trust and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) – on July 25-26 will see 40 speakers from Singapore, Myanmar, Australia, Sweden, and more sharing their knowledge and expertise on relevant topics including conservation, taxonomy, habitats, tourism, orchid industry, research and development, cultivation and propagation, maintenance, as well as import and export regulations.

“We have two keynote speakers namely former Orchid Society of Southeast Asia (OSSEA) president and former Malayan Orchid Review editor Dr Teoh Eng Soon of Singapore and Myanmar Floriculturist Association vice-president and Ecosystem Conservation and Community Development Initiative (ECCDI) Myanmar executive committee member Dr Saw Lwin of Myanmar, who will be presenting their topics on ‘Orchids as Aphrodisiacs’ and ‘Regional Conservation Initiatives’ respectively,” said Abu Bakar.

Around 600 participants comprising orchid growers, researchers, orchid enthusiasts and tertiary students from Australia, Canada, China, United States, Taiwan, Thailand, Ecuador, India, New Zealand, and Malaysia will attend the conference.

With Kuching being the first in Malaysia to host APOC, Abu Bakar is optimistic the international event will serve as a platform to promote the city and Sarawak to the rest of the world.

“This is in addition to promoting awareness and development of the hybridisation, cultivation, science and conservation of orchids and to support research in these fields as well as to encourage new discovery of Borneo orchids from Sarawak and to highlight its orchid scenario, which is home to 300 orchids species from 148 genera with large biodiversity potential,” he said.
