KUCHING: In line with its green initiative and Week of Innovation, Integrity and Occupational Safety and Health, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has introduced a new recreational activity known as DBKU Plogging Walk.

The walk was officiated at by mayor Datuk Reduan Junaidi.

Plogging, which originates from Sweden in 2016, combines jogging with picking up litter, introduced through leisure activities organised by fitness activists there with the aim of promoting healthy lifestyle trends while also caring for the environment.

Around 2018, this activity received attention from other countries as it has increased awareness about plastic pollution.

In this region (Malaysia), this activity has not received widespread coverage and is still not popular.

In this regard, DBKU decided to cultivate this activity through organising events such as jogging, brisk-walking, picnicking and so on while collecting garbage in surrounding areas.

Yesterday, about 250 DBKU staff collected a total of 48kg of waste during their walk — 3.55kg of recyclable plastic bottles and 44.45kg of non-recyclable waste.

The DBKU Innovation, Integrity and Occupational Safety and Health Week will be held on Dec 9 at DBKU Auditorium.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) cum Utilities (Water Supply) Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi will officiate at the event. DBKU hoped that the public would bring their own biodegradable garbage bags to collect garbage and dump it into the trash bins provided to keep the city clean.
