KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) is now actively engaged in tree-planting activities in an effort to promote its role to the community, said its director Dr Lulie Melling.

She said there is a need for the institute to conduct such activities since the establishment of Tropi was initially to protect the interests of the state and industry in the field.

“We want the people of Sarawak to know about Tropi, and this tree-planting activity is our initial effort so that the general public knows what we are doing.

“Thanks to the institute’s effort, it is now a well-known institute worldwide,” she told reporters during a ceremony to launch the tree-planting initiative, held at the Tropi Complex here yesterday.

The tree-planting programme is being carried out in collaboration with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), with two local authorities supplying a total of 25 saplings.

“This tree-planting activity is also part of our efforts to continue the spirit of gardening or planting trees among the community,” added Lulie.

She pointed out that the institute decided to launch the programme after seeing encouraging signs of people engaged in such activity during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

She added the institute found out that tree planting has become one of the activities that reduced the stress of being confined at home during the MCO.

“This tree-planting effort also complements the policy announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, which is the replanting of trees and forests in Sarawak,” said Lulie.

MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos and DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad were among those present at the ceremony.
