DBKU mulls holding Car-free Day
Posted on : 08 Feb 2019  Source of News: Borneo Post Online

KUCHING: A Car-free Day is being mulled for Kuching City once a week starting March or April.

Datuk Bandar of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said an area stretching from Jalan Gambier to Main Bazaar has been identified for the Car-free Day activities.

“Actually we used to hold activities there two years ago which required the road to be closed, but it has since been opposed by certain parties. At that time, we thought Kuching was not ready for this Car-free Day.

“But now the situation requires us to have open space for recreational activities in front of the Kuching Waterfront. Therefore, we now have a relook at our programmes and to have the area from Jalan Gambier to Main Bazaar closed to traffic once a week to enable recreational activities to be conducted there,” he said.

Abang Abdul Wahap was met at the Chinese New Year open house of DBKU commission member Dato Wee Hong Seng on Wednesday.

He nonetheless stressed that DBKU needs to hold engagement with stakeholders before the Car-free Day is implemented in March or April.

“Most probably after Majlis Agenda DBKU from March 24 to 29, then we start to have this Car-free Day,” he said.

On another matter, he said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is scheduled to launch an app which tells the history of Kuching on Chap Goh Meh or Feb 19.

He said the app can be used to scan the more than 20 historical-themed murals in DBKU areas.

“I think this app is the first in Sarawak, if not Malaysia.

“All you need to do is to scan the mural, and history information will be displayed on the telephone screen,” he said.
