KUCHING: Vandals are a liability to the society at large.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan said damage and destruction to public amenities is not only depriving citizens of their rights to enjoy these amenities, but public funds are wasted on maintenance works.

“DBKU has received complaints from the locals on vandalism occurring in Kampung Gita Baru. This includes the act of destroying public properties such as garbage bins, which causes the surrounding to be an eyesore,” he said when officiating at the Bin Centre Beautification (BCB) at Kampung Gita Baru yesterday.

Junaidi called upon the people to help DBKU by not hesitating to report to it any act of vandalism in their immediate area.

On the BCB, Junaidi said DBKU pioneered the project with the help of Trienekens Sdn Bhd in an effort to make the bin area look clean and tidy.

The project involves a few garbage collection centres which are identified across Kuching North with the objective of raising the people’s awareness on the cleanliness of their immediate surroundings.

“The issue of cleanliness is a responsibility that should be shouldered by all, both the people and the local authorities.

“Our main objective is cleanliness and a healthy environment, which will contribute to quality living,” he said.

Also present were Trienekens Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Stephen Chin, DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad and local community leader Penghulu Oeng Abang Oteng.
