THE local authorities in Sarawak have, to date, completed 290 infrastructure projects, while 179 more are at various stages of implementation, says Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said the projects were approved in 2019 with an allocation of RM91.18 million and implemented by 24 local authorities all over the state.

“These projects are for drainage, landscaping, roads, street-lightings, traffic lights, footpaths, public toilets, jetties and markets,” he said in his winding-up speech at the DUN sitting yesterday, in updating the floor about the various development projects and programmes under his ministry.

Apart from that, Dr Sim said under the Cabinet Committee for Rural Transformation Programme, his ministry received an allocation of RM14.4 million this year to carry out 12 flood mitigation projects, to be implemented by the local authorities, Public Works Department (JKR) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

Of the 12, three had reached completion and another two would be completed by the end of this year, while the remaining projects should reach completion within next year, he said.

For the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), Dr Sim said as at Oct this year, 602 projects amounting to
RM86.99 million had been approved for implementation by 23 local authorities, of which 164 had been completed.

“In addition to these, 97 projects have been approved under ‘Projek Rakyat’ since 2018 with a total allocation of RM793.17 million.

“These projects are implemented by the DID, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), JKR, Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) and the local authorities.

“Currently 35 projects have been completed and 62 projects are at various stages of implementation,” he said.

Meanwhile, under the Malaysia Road Record Information System (Marris), Dr Sim said the total approved allocation this year for 24 local authorities under his ministry was RM322.6 million, while a further RM276.35 million had been disbursed to his ministry by the State Financial Secretary as at Oct 31 this year.

In addition, he said the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government had also allocated RM30.94 million for the 26 local authorities in the state to implement 107 minor infrastructure projects.

“To date, 65 projects have been completed, while 42 are at various stages of implementation,” he said, adding that the federal ministry had also approved RM700,000 for the implementation of two Safe City Projects under the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

Dr Sim said the project in Batu Kawah, under MPP, had reached completion, while the one at Demak Laut, under DBKU, would be completed by the end of this year.
