KUCHING: New Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datu Junaidi Reduan supports the setting up of a joint committee comprising councillors and commissioners from the Kuching South City Council ( MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

Junaidi also suggested that the joint committee include the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

“I fully support that but not only that, but we will extend it to another council called MPP. If you notice it, the border is so near, after Emart ( Matang) is MPP, and we also have Padungan area and after that is MBKS. There is no such thing as DBKU is DBKU, MBKS is MBKS. No, we have to work together,” he told reporters after being sworn in yesterday.

New Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng had proposed the joint committee after he was sworn-in on Tuesday.

Wee said the proposed joint committee would function as a bridge between MBKS and DBKU, allowing both authorities to identify and subsequently manage issues arising from common areas of responsibility.

Asked when the three local authorities would discuss the joint committee Junaidi replied, “As soon as possible,” adding he already had an informal discussion with Wee.

He added that he would meet with DBKU personnel to get priorities right on the vision, mission, and objectives, as the commission’s direction should be charted collectively.

Junaidi said his mission as the new Datuk Bandar is to ensure the vision of the three main stakeholders – the government of the day, the people of Kuching North, and DBKU – becomes a reality.

“The vision is there, my contract is two years, so within these two years, we have to see what we can do and achieve that vision,” he said.

He added that his predecessor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, who served for eight years from Aug 31, 2011, did an excellent job and believes DBKU will continue its previous plans with room for improvement.

“I will do my best. Of course the people’s desires are unlimited, but the means to achieve are limited. As I said again, we will do our best for DBKU folk,” he said.

Junaidi is Kuching North’s seventh Datuk Bandar.

Born on Sept 12, 1958, he served in the civil service for many years and his last post was Deputy State Financial Secretary.
